  • FAMILIAR FACE

Arsenal welcome Aston Villa to the Emirates tomorrow evening, and a familiar face is returning to face his old side.

Emi Martinez left Arsenal in the summer to seek regular first team football – which he has found at Aston Villa.

Martinez played a key role in Arsenal’s FA Cup success last season.

Arteta spoke highly of Martinez ahead of tomorrow’s reunion.

Speaking to the club site, Arteta said: “Obviously, it wasn’t in my plans to sell him, but we gave him the chance because he deserved it.

“He performed really, really well but we have to balance the books. We have to make the right choices in the market and obviously, I couldn’t guarantee him to be the number one.

“He’s a very ambitious person, he has been working really hard and he can see now that the opportunity is there.

“He’s got the opportunity to play with Argentina and when a player asks you to do that I think you have to be open enough and tell him what you think about him.

“If he makes the decision to leave, you should try to support him because he deserves it for the way he has served the club over the years.”

  • INCOMPREHENSIBLE

Arsene Wenger isn’t usually critical of his old club, but one recent decision has put them in the old boss’ firing line.

The decision to axe 55 non-playing staff members due to the on-going coronavirus global pandemic didn’t sit well with Wenger.

As well as the club getting rid of club mascot, Gunnersaurus.

Speaking to SoFoot, Wenger said: “The decision was financially unjustifiable. I don’t know what got into them, no one can understand it.

“Everyone who loves Arsenal didn’t take the decision well. I’m part of them.

“They laid off 55 people, which could possibly be explained by a certain reorganisation, a desire for efficiency.

“The mascot cannot be justified by a desire to rebalance finances. It’s incomprehensible.”

  • FAMILY MAN

  • TITLE CHARGE

According to The Irish Mirror, Pep Guardiola believes that Arsenal are contenders for the title this season.

Guardiola said: “They (Liverpool) are the biggest favourite, but I think with what’s happened with the pandemic, the situation is a bit different. I see other teams who are strong.

“Leicester maintained the level from last season, apart from the last month-and-a-half of it when they dropped points, but now have incredibly solid results.

“Arsenal made a big step forward to be contenders. At Tottenham, Jose Mourinho has the team that he wants. Chelsea are so stable now, not conceding goals, scoring a lot and they have a huge squad for rotating top players.

“Manchester United, in this moment, are not [doing well] in terms of results, but we saw the quality they had last season.”

Gnabry, since leaving Arsenal has become a tidy player for Bayern Munich, and has finally shown the potential people knew was there.

Despite moving on, he spoke fondly on his time in London.

Speaking to CBS, Gnabry said: “Most of all it’s a test of character. You have to leave your comfort zone, your friends, your family.

“It helps you a lot in building strong character because you’re in some way by yourself or in a whole new environment.

“It’s always good for young people. I would recommend them to do it.

“I would do it over again if I was in that position because it helped my character a lot. You experience new things, also in other countries the leagues and teaching of football is also good. It’s never a wrong thing to move abroad.”

  • BUK THE TREND

Bukayo Saka has registered more assists in all competitions than any other Premier League teenager since the start of last season.

According to Opta, the versatile Arsenal winger has set up an incredible 14 goals despite being just 19 years old.

Saka, who won his first England cap last month in the 3-0 win against Wales, had only made four appearances for Arsenal by the end of the 2018/19 campaign.

But with Unai Emery and then Mikel Arteta seeing just how high he can go, Saka ended up playing 38 games in total last term.

He has already clocked up ten games for the Gunners this season, starring as both a wing-back and a winger.

And Saka now has 14 assists to his name in all competitions since the beginning of the 2019/20 season – more than any other teenager playing for a Premier League club.

  • PARTEY POOPER

Thomas Partey could have unleashed the best in Mesut Ozil – it’s a shame Arsenal can’t play them together, Paul Merson has claimed.

The Gunners were desperate to add a star name to their midfield this summer, with Partey and Houssem Aouar targeted.
