Arsenal are considering making a summer swoop for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, according to Express Sport, and his signing could be a strong signal of intent from the club.

Mikel Arteta is believed to have two midfielders and a centre-back on his wish-list ahead of the summer, with the Spaniard keen to complete all of his transfer business before the start of Euro 2020.

One such target to fill the centre-back role is Upamecano, who Leipzig reportedly won’t sell for less than his release clause, which will drop to £52 million in the summer.

While the Gunners will face competition for the 21-year old Frenchman, with AC Milan believed to be keen on landing his signature, it would show an incredible signal of intent if Arsenal were to land the highly rated defender.

Described as “one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga“, Upamecano could be a significant upgrade on several of Arsenal’s current centre-back options, having been likened to Marcel Desailly in the past, and the Gunners would show their intention of breaking back into the top four by signing a future talent like Upamecano for major money this summer.

Described by his RB Leipzig teammate Yussuf Poulsen as “fast, clever [and] good in a challenge”, Upamecano has some of the traits that could help him excel in the Premier League, and with William Saliba returning from a loan spell with Saint-Etienne in the summer, Arsenal fans are already growing excited about potentially seeing the pair line up alongside one another.

Arsenal certainly don’t have a deal for Upamecano wrapped up just yet, and they will need to convince the Frenchman that a step out of the Champions League could benefit his career, but if they can do so then fans should be excited, but most importantly, impressed with their club’s determination and desire to return to the Premier League’s highest echelon.
