Arsenal are reportedly set to win the race to sign Atlanta United’s Miguel Almiron in the January transfer window.
According to Mike Allen of the Daily Mirror, the Gunners will pay in the region of £15 million to secure the attacking midfielder after his impressive season for Atlanta in Major League Soccer.
In the report, it’s noted the 24-year-old is likely to miss the remainder of the MLS regular season due to injury, as he left Saturday’s 2-1 win over New England Revolution after just 30 minutes. Atlanta are a point clear at the top of the Eastern Conference.
Much of that is down to the form of Almiron, who has excelled in the final third for the franchise from a variety of positions. While he’s primarily operated behind a central striker, he has also been used at the point of the attack and tucked in from the left flank.
Per The Sportsman Transfers, in terms of both scoring goals and creating goals, the Paraguayan has been vital to his team:

Speaking about the player, Atlanta manager Tata Martino said he believes Almiron has the quality needed to be a success in English football.
“The moment when Miguel Almiron leaves and goes to your country (England) then I think there will be a different view of MLS,” he said, per Allen.
Arsenal are a club associated with versatile, technically proficient and aesthetic footballers, boxes that Almiron has ticked in his MLS career to this point.
While games in the United States can so often be frantic and physical, his natural feel for the ball means Almiron elevates himself above what can be midfield maelstroms. He can dribble, pass, and when chances do drop to him, he can be clinical too.
Football journalist Peter Coates noted the Gunners have long been linked with the player in the past and believes he’s ready to make the step up to the Premier League:

If Almirón has success in Europe will be a great step for MLS as it would show a valid route from South America to Europe via the US and could open the door for even more transfers
Although there’s no doubting the talent of the Paraguay star, at the moment, it’s tough to see where he would fit into the setup of manager Unai Emery. As things stand, the coach is struggling to try and fit Mesut Ozil, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Aaron Ramsey—who all operate in a similar position to Almiron—into the team.
If Almiron is to make his move to Europe, then getting game time in order to settle will be important to keep his development on an upward trajectory. At the moment, it’d be difficult to see him getting those assurances with the Gunners.
