LONDON — Arsenal coach Unai Emery has told striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang not to allow his goalless start to the season to affect his confidence.
Aubameyang missed a great opportunity to open his account against Chelsea last weekend, but Emery urged him to put that to the back of his mind against West Ham on Saturday.
“Aubameyang needs to find the confidence, then to score,” the coach said. “I know a lot of strikers in my career and it’s about the moment — they need the moment, and he’s the same.”
Fellow forward Alexandre Lacazette, who came on as a substitute against Manchester City and Chelsea, is also yet to score.
But Emery said: “I’m sure now that Auba, Lacazette, Danny Welbeck, they will score more goals for us.
“We need a little patience. But we scored [against Chelsea] with [Alex] Iwobi, who is also very good, and [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan also. The second line players did very well.
“But also the strikers, they are going to do more than other players. I want the first attacking player to be our goalkeeper and the first defender is the striker.
“If we work together, they are going to find their quality on the pitch and the striker will do it with goals.”
