The father of Lucas Torreira has said a move to London “truly scares us” but his son “is not going to be alone” if a transfer to Arsenal goes through.

Arsenal have been in talks with Sampdoria about a €30 million deal for the Uruguay midfielder, but it has been delayed by his involvement at the World Cup.

Torreira’s father Ricardo, a football journalist who is in Russia for the tournament, told Uruguayan TV station Teledoce a move to the capital would be daunting.

“The truth is that we don’t want to think about that yet because we are getting frightened,” he said.

“It’s difficult to manage the language, to adapt to the society and customs and at the same time not lose ours.

“But there’s a whole programme being built around Lucas, where people are going to accompany him. He is not going to be alone in that sense.

“It’s all strange because we come from a town of 25,000 inhabitants and, to leap into this world, everything is different, everything is difficult. We don’t want to think about London right now because it truly scares us.”

Speaking to Fox Argentina, Ricardo Torreira said his son’s move to the Emirates Stadium would go through “if nothing strange happens.”

“It is all done in a draft and only missing the arrival of Lucas to England,” he added. “It’s not the moment. We will wait for the World Cup to end, and after it finishes he will go to England to do the medical.

“That is the information that exists until today, but this goes so fast that in football you can be surprised at anything. So many things can change.

“I hope everything ends well with Arsenal. We are satisfied with what they offered us, but let’s wait a little longer until the World Cup ends.”

Torreira would be Arsenal’s fourth signing of the summer after right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner, centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos and goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
