Former Cardiff ace Ramsey recently declared his future in North London is in doubt with his agent locked in negotiations with the club.

Emery, 46, also insisted he wants the 27-year-old to be one of his five captains this season.

Ramsey wore the armband for the Gunners' clash with Atletico Madrid earlier today, before he was brought off in the 60th minute as Arsenal lost on penalties after the game finished 1-1.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, Emery said: "I think Aaron is an important player for us.

"The contract is one thing for the club and then one thing for the player.

"I want him to stay with us, to work with us, to give the team big performances with his quality. I think he's going to stay here with us."

And even though the three-time FA Cup winner was skipper for the day against Diego Simeone's side, Emery insists he has not made a decision who will take over Per Mertesacker.

The ex-Paris Saint-Germain gaffer added: "This is not yet official, this decision.

"I said to you I want five captains in the team, then the numbers we are going to give to them, the first, the second, third, four and five.

"But Aaron has the condition to be one of the captains."
