ARSENAL were in “serious” transfer talks with Standard Liege for defender Zinho Vanheusden.

The Gunners had a centre-back at the top of their wishlist this summer and shortlisted Vanheusden, according to Standard manager Michel Preud’homme.

However, the 20-year-old was convinced to stay at the club and snub a move to the Emirates.

“Last season he showed his qualities,’ Preud’homme told Dutch outlet Het Laatste Nieuws.

“That is why we have invested heavily in keeping him here.

“At a certain point Arsenal seriously knocked at the door, but we were able to convince Zinho to stay and we are happy about that.”

Vanheusden made 30 appearances for Standard last season after joining on loan from Inter Milan.

But he made his move permanent in the summer as Unai Emery was forced to look elsewhere.

The Arsenal manager signed William Saliba for £27milliom from Saint-Etienne, but the 18-year-old was sent back out on loan to the club this season.

Emery went on to sign David Luiz on transfer deadline day for £8million arriving from London rivals Chelsea.
