While Chelsea have been linked to a host of strikers in recent weeks, from Timo Werner to Moussa Dembélé to Dries Mertens to Arkadiusz Milik, one name that had been conspicuously missing was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The 30-year-old striker’s contract expires next year, and while Arsenal have been trying to get it extended for a long time, it appears that their efforts will bear no fruit and they will have to sell to avoid another Aaron Ramsey-type situation.
Chelsea are in need of a striker who can deputize for Tammy Abraham when needed, with Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud unlikely to stay at the club beyond the summer. In addition, Willian, Pedro and Willy Caballero are also more likely to leave than not, which makes signing experienced players all the more crucial.
The Telegraph suggested earlier that Aubameyang could be exactly what Chelsea need and now, there is a report from ESPN FC that the 30-year-old is indeed wanted at Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal obviously aren’t quite ready to give up yet, but the closer we get to the summer, the more compelled they might feel to do so — especially as they could then turn around and use the transfer fee received to fund other signings for next season.
Aubameyang’s relatively cheap asking price of £40m makes him a much more reasonable proposition than a £70m Dembélé, or a probably Liverpool-bound Timo Werner.
Besides Aubameyang’s high wages, reportedly around £200,000-a-week, the only other possible obstacle could be the Gunners’ refusal to sell their star player to a rival — though that didn’t stop us before with Olivier Giroud and Ashley Cole.
