FORMER Manchester United and Arsenal hero Robin van Persie is set to retire at the end of the season.
The 35-year-old, who currently plays for Feyenoord, said in an interview that he had "lost the fun".
Quizzed on retirement, he told AD: "When I have to stop? That is normally at the end of this season.
"That was also the approach.
"I will be 36 years old, then I have been a professional for 18 years. And from the age of five, I've only been involved in football."
RVP, who scored 50 goals in 102 appearances for Holland, thanked his current Dutch club for restoring his love of the game – with outrageous goals like this one no doubt helping.
He added: "I had lost the fun. That's not how I wanted to end, without pleasure. The pleasure has returned to Feyenoord."
Van Persie helped Feyenoord – the club where he started his senior career – when the KNVB Cup in May and has bagged six goals in 11 appearances this season.
But he will mostly be remembered for his time at Arsenal and Man Utd – along with that header against Spain in the 2014 World Cup.
Van Persie joined the Gunners on May 17 2004 for £2.75million and went on to score 96 goals in 194 appearances for the club.
He lifted the FA Cup in 2005 and FA Community Shield in 2004 under the guidance of legendary boss Arsene Wenger.
It was on August 17 2012 that he joined United for an initial £22.5m, helping the club win their 13th Premier League title and 20th English crown.
Sandwiched in between was a runners-up finish in the 2010 World Cup to the all-conquering Spain side of that era.
