Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy says he was “astounded” by Derby County’s decision to sack former captain Richard Keogh after he reportedly refused to take a pay cut after being injured as a passenger in a recent drink-driving incident.

Keogh, 33, saw his contract at the Championship clubs cancelled, while Tom Lawrence and Mason Bennett – both arrested and charged with drink driving – remain at the club. 

“I’m astounded at what’s gone on there, I really am,” McCarthy told Buzz.ie Sport. “I’ve only worked with him since December and he’s been brilliant, such a great guy.
